The Common Toad is one of the most widespread amphibians in Europe. This species lives in a variety of habitats, such as forests, gardens, grasslands, and even urban areas. They prefer moist environments near still water, where they reproduce. In terms of behavior, Common Toads are mainly nocturnal. During the day, they hide under leaves, stones, or in burrows. They move slowly but can leap quickly and surprisingly far when they feel threatened. Common Toads often hibernate in sheltered places, for example under tree stumps or in burrows. The diet of the Common Toad consists of various invertebrates, including insects, worms, spiders, and slugs. They catch their prey with their sticky tongues, which they shoot out rapidly. During the breeding season, which begins in early spring, Common Toads migrate to water to mate.
