About "Corridor at the El Badi Palace | Marrakesh Morocco | Africa | Pastel"

About the artwork

The El Badi Palace is a large palace, or its remains. With orange walls and colorful floors. Water tanks, citrus trees and wooden doors in the courtyard. And storks on the walls.

It was built a few months after his accession in 1578 by order of Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur of the Saadian dynasty , and most of his reign was spent building and embellishing there. The palace, decorated with materials imported from various countries ranging from Italy toMali , was used for receptions and designed to showcase the sultan's wealth and power. It was part of a larger Saadian palace complex that occupied Marrakesh's Kasbah district.

The palace was neglected after al-Mansur's death in 1603 and eventually fell into disrepair after the decline of the Saadian dynasty. The valuable materials (especially marble ) were removed and reused in other buildings throughout Morocco. Today it is a major tourist attraction in Marrakech

I took the photo during a trip to Morocco, visiting Marrakech and the surrounding desert in February 2022.
