The Belted Galloway is thick-haired, sturdy and stocky. Originating from south-west Scotland, these cows are polled, usually black and white, but also reddish-brown or even light-coloured. It can withstand extremely rough conditions.
The Galloway is reputed to be non-aggressive and self-reliant. The mother hides the calf for the first few days. The calf stays with the mother for about a year. Galloways can be used year-round for natural grazing.
