Photo of cows in the country, reflected in the water of the ditch. In the background you can see a mill, illuminated by the setting sun
Typical dutch... cows, flat meadow, and a windmill in the distance. I drove by here, the cows were looking so curious. I saw the mill and the beautiful light. So I had to stop for a moment. The photo was taken in Friesland (Fryslan). The mill you see is the mill of Wyns. The Wijnsermune, or Wijnsermolen.
The Wijnsermolen (Fries: Wynsermûne) is a polder mill located northeast of the Frisian village of Wijns and near Aldtsjerk (Tietjerksteradeel lies).
The Wijnsermolen was built in 1871 to drain the Wijnserpolder. The mill remained in operation until about 1975, although in recent years it operated mainly by motor power.
In 1993, the Wijnsermolen became the property of the De Fryske Mole Foundation, which had it restored again in 1994/1995. For a long time the mill was surrounded by excessive overgrowth. That situation improved in 2006, when many of the surrounding trees and shrubs were cut down or pruned. In the same year, the Wijnsermolen was designated by the Wetterskip Fryslân as a reserve pumping station in case of flooding.
The photo was taken in October 2022.
