Towering high above the old town of Rethymno stands the impressive Rethymno Fortress – a silent witness to centuries past and, at the same time, one of the most beautiful vantage points on my favourite island, Crete. The mighty walls, built by the Venetians in the 16th century, tell tales of conquest, defence and the passage of time. Amidst ancient bastions, sweeping courtyards and the view of the deep-blue sea, a special atmosphere emerges – rugged, steeped in history and yet imbued with Mediterranean lightness.
It is precisely this blend of structure and vastness that makes the fortress a fascinating subject for art. A watercolour-style painting based on an original photograph captures the warm hues of the stones, the gentle play of light and the airy expanse of the sky in a particularly evocative way. The soft transitions and transparent layers of colour bring the scene to life without weighing it down – almost as if the history of the walls were flowing on in the light.
As a piece of interior décor, such a watercolour has an elegant and calming effect. The natural, earthy tones of the fortress blend harmoniously with the cool blue and turquoise hues of the sea, creating a balanced overall picture. As a result, the motif suits both modern and classic interiors, bringing a subtle depth to the room.
A watercolour of the Fortezza of Rethymno is more than just a decorative element – it is a window into another time, a touch of history and the Mediterranean that lends character to the room and invites you to linger.

Photography has been a part of my life for almost as long as I can remember – initially just as a hobby, but for the last 15 years or so as a profession. I am particularly drawn to animals, plants and landscapes.
