The crocus vernus is a species of crocus also known as the spring crocus or the variegated crocus. An early-flowering bulbous plant mainly found in temperate regions of Europe and Asia, the crocus vernus usually has flowers with six petals in colours ranging from white and pink to purple and yellow. The flowers bloom in early spring and are a welcome sight after the long winter. The plant grows from a bulb and has narrow, grass-like leaves. The bulb can remain in the ground and flower for several years in a row. A hardy plant that requires little maintenance and is relatively easy to grow, crocus vernus is often used as an ornamental plant in gardens and parks because of its beautiful flowers and early flowering. It is also an important source of pollen and nectar for bees and other pollinating insects in early spring, when few other flowers are still in bloom.
