When you look at this work, you see an old wooden door with weathered glass and a robust stone arch that is full of character. The wall is marked by time, with cracks and discolouration that show the very beauty of impermanence. Colourful flowers - fuchsias and petunias - bloom on either side, providing a cheerful contrast to the rough texture of the brickwork. Sunlight falls playfully on the pavement, highlighting the warm tones of the stones and wood.
The inspiration for this image came while walking through Bergen in Norway. The atmosphere I wanted to create is warm, inviting and a touch romantic. This work tells of silence, tranquillity and the beauty of simplicity.
Technically, this work is special because of the play with light and shadow. The soft sunlight lifts the details in the bricks and wood to the fore, adding depth and texture.
