The daisy or mayflower (Bellis perennis) is a perennial herb in the composite family (Asteraceae) that grows up to 15 cm tall. Bellis is derived from Latin and means beautiful,[source?] Perennis means "perennial, perennial".
There are mainly two hypotheses about the origin of the Dutch name 'daisy'. The first is a contraction of the word "made", meaning meadow or hayfield (cf. also "maaien"), and the word "lief", because people probably liked to see the flower in the grass.[1] The second hypothesis indicates that the word possibly comes from maagde-lief, because the flower was associated with the Virgin Mary. source wikipedia
