On November 24, 1973, an American Dc-3 crashed on the black sand beach of Sólheimasandur near the town of Vík. All crew members survived the crash.
The exact reason for the crash is not known, although some sources suggest that the plane ran out of fuel after the pilot switched to the wrong fuel tank.
The wreckage is still on the beach near the sea. Although the wreckage is missing some pieces. For example, the wings and the tail section are gone.
Nobody knows where they went, although rumors say that a farmer took them to sell in Vík.
