This picturesque marina is one of the few parts of the old city that survived the bombardment of Rotterdam in 1940. It has a striking history as the place from where the Pilgrim Fathers left for America and as the birthplace of naval hero Piet Hein. The Pilgrim's Church from 1761 is still a reminder of that time and is open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays. There are church services on Sundays. Delfshaven used to make a living from herring fishing and the distillation of gin. Now you'll find cosy antique and trinket shops, artists' studios, gin cafes, beer brewers and no-nonsense eateries in the historic canal houses. Historic Delfshaven has always maintained its authentic looks, with the old-fashioned corn mill De Destilleerketel as an important landmark.
