Dilapidated but not abandoned... by Carlo Hermans

This striking photograph of the abandoned Sanatorium Du Basil, dating from 1900, captures the transience of architecture in an almost painterly manner. The imposing natural-stone façades, graceful arches and distinctive tower combine to form a timeless backdrop where history and decay converge. The dramatic cloudy sky, combined with the powerful backlighting from the low-hanging sun, creates an almost mystical atmosphere. The location, at an altitude of 420 metres, was chosen for its clean air. The south-facing building was designed with a concave, curved shape to optimally absorb sunlight, warmth and fresh air. The eye is effortlessly guided by the curved balustrade towards the heart of the building, allowing depth and perspective to come together naturally.
The shot was taken using a wide-angle composition to perfectly balance both the dark stones and the bright sky. This ensures that details remain visible in both shadow and light, giving the photograph an impressive, almost cinematic quality.
Originally built as a sanatorium for tuberculosis and later a psychiatric hospital, the complex exudes a past centred on hope and recovery. Today, the abandoned corridors tell a different story: one of the ravages of time, the power of nature and the beauty of decay. It is precisely this contrast that seems to be the inspiration behind this photograph.
The atmosphere is at once mysterious, melancholic and serene. It evokes emotions of curiosity, wonder and nostalgia, whilst the sun symbolically allows a glimmer of hope to shine through.
This artwork is a real eye-catcher for both homes and commercial spaces. It brings character, depth and conversation-starters to any space and reminds us that even in decay there lies a special kind of beauty.
