A dirndl is a traditional Bavarian/Austrian costume, based on a mixture of costume and servant's clothing from 1870. Dirndls are worn, for example, during the Oktoberfest in Munich. In southern Germany and Austria, dirndls are also commonly worn during church and other celebrations. In certain regions (Salzkammergut) even more often just like Lederhosen for the male population. The dirndl emphasizes the female form by cinching the waist and making the bosom look fuller.
Franz von Defregger (Ederhof near Stronach, East Tyrol, April 30, 1835 - Munich, Bavaria, Germany January 2, 1921) was an Austrian painter of genre and history paintings.
Defregger was born into a peasant family. In 1860 he went to Innsbruck, where he studied with sculptor Michael Stolz. He went to Munich in 1861 to study. In 1883 he was raised to the peerage.
