The nature reserve De Dombergheide has an area of 17 hectares, managed by Natuurpunt. Eleven hectares are owned by the organisation, 6 hectares are leased from the city of Turnhout. Some smaller parcels in the area are still private property. You will find wet and dry heather, fens, coniferous and deciduous forest and moist hay meadows. Current manager of the Dombergheide is Peter Loyens.
In April 2019 De Dombergheide officially became part of the Turnhouts Vennengebied. The latter was then extended to 424 hectares and the recognition was extended to 2044.
