Van Ewijcksluis is located near the Amstelmeer and also has its own harbour. From here you can also sail in the direction of the IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea.
Between Van Ewijcksluis and the former island of Wieringen lies the Amsteldiepdijk, popularly known as the Kleine or Korte Afsluitdijk. This dike was closed in 1924. The Amsteldiep, one of the entrances to the Zuiderzee, was closed off and at the same place the present Amstelmeer was created. Through the Kleine Afsluitdijk Wieringen was connected to the mainland, so from that moment on it was no longer an island.
The dike protecting the Amstelmeer from the Wadden Sea was an exemplary project for the Afsluitdijk between North Holland and Friesland. The engineers abandoned a lot of it. Due to the soft soil the dike body shifted and the underlayer was squeezed out sideways.
On the side of the Amstelmeer this is still clearly visible: along the dike is a nature reserve that " the subsidence " is hot. The Kleine Afsluitdijk is also important because this was the first area where boulder clay was used as building ground in dikes.
