Antarctica consists of two main areas. East Antarctica and West Antarctica. More than 98% of Antarctica is covered with ice. Ice and snow dominate the landscape. The two main areas of Antarctica mentioned above are separated by the Transantarctic Mountains. There are also at least two active volcanoes in Antarctica - Mount Erebus (3794 m) is the highest and has a lake of permanently molten lava. The other volcano is located on Deception Island north of the Antarctic Peninsula and is a popular stopover for tourist ships; because there it is possible to take a warm bath in the volcanically heated water - surrounded by Antarctic ice and penguins.
