A group of Piekeniers of the Dutch state army led by the prince of Orange, Frederick Henry marches into battle. Accompanied by a group of drummers beating rhythmic and rousing marching orders. A piekenier is a soldier who fought with a pike, a kind of long lance with a length of 3 to sometimes 5 metres, and fought in the 17th and early 18th centuries in large formations, being supported by units of musketeers.
A historical image with a cinematic character and atmospheric natural Rembrand light. A battlefield scene in action with rising vapours of gunpowder in which infantry in historic medieval dress carry out a charge with a long lance in hand.
The Battle of Grolle is a recurring historical event re-enacting the Siege of Grol in 1672 by Frederick Henry (Prince of Orange) on behalf of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands.
As many as 1,500 re-enactors come together to re-enact this historic battle in the Netherlands' patriotic history. For three days, they will keep as close as possible to the living conditions of the time. They are completely deprived of electricity or other modern aids and eat food based on old-fashioned ingredients and prepared on open fires.
For a moment, you imagine yourself back in the years of the 80-year war, which passes by like a movie this day. Horses gallop across the field, cannons roar, muskets are fired and soldiers go to war
