Durgerdam is a dike village in Landelijk Noord, the rural part of Amsterdam's northern district. The village has the status of a protected village view. Between 1818 and 1921 it was part of the municipality of Ransdorp, until it merged into the municipality of Amsterdam.
Durgerdam is situated on the Waterlandse Zeedijk, which was raised with shovels by farmers in the 13th century. Before sandbanks in the Zuiderzee became increasingly shallower and the Afsluitdijk closed off this shipping route for good, the village was an important Zuiderzee port where a number of famous captains came from. After the decline of the Dutch merchant shipping, the inhabitants mainly lived from (herring) fishing.
