Walraad Nieuwhoff, Dutch fleet off Goeree after the Four-Day Sea Battle, after Hendrik Vettewinkel, 1800 - 1837
The Four-Day Sea Battle was a naval battle during the Second Anglo-Dutch War. The battle lasted from 11 June to 14 June 1666 and was fought between the Flemish and English coasts. The battle is one of the longest naval battles in history. Together with the Battle of Bergen Bay, won by the Dutch in 1665, and the later successful passage to Chatham in 1667, victory in the Four-Day Sea Battle ensured the ultimate Dutch victory in the Second Anglo-Dutch War. And this victory also meant that after this Second Anglo-Dutch War, England never again dared to launch a naval war against the successful and experienced Dutch on her own during the 17th century.
