About the artwork

Photo of a cityscape from the bridge at Delfshaven, with the setting sun in the distance. With the famous bag carrier's house on the left.

This picturesque marina is one of the few parts of the old city that survived the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940. It has a remarkable history as the place from which the Pilgrim Fathers left for America and as the birthplace of Piet Hein.

In the past, people in Delfshaven earned a living by fishing herring and distilling gin. Now you will find cozy antique and trinket shops, artist studios, gin cafés, beer breweries, no-nonsense eateries and the Dutch Pinball Museum in the historic canal houses. Historic Delfshaven has always managed to retain its authentic looks, with the old-fashioned flour mill De Distilleerketel as an important landmark.

Delfshaven was founded in 1389, when the Delfshavense Schie was dug to provide the city of Delft with a connection to the Maas. Since then, ships have been able to reach the Nieuwe Maas from Delft via the Delftse and Delfshavense Schie.

The port town of 'Delfshaven' arose around the lock. It had the status of a 'colony of Delft'. A setback in growth occurred when the Hoeks caused enormous destruction at the end of the Hoekse and Kabeljauwse disputes (around 1490). At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Delfshaven had just over 100 houses and 400 inhabitants.
