About the artwork

Dying or sleeping Buddha, Gal Vihara, Sri Lanka. The moment when Buddha reaches the state of enlightenment. Granite sculpture carved out of the wall and 14 m. long. A lane along a water basin leads to the Gal Vihara, the famous rock temple with four huge statues carved out of the granite rock from the middle of the 12th century. Inscriptions have been made in the rock face. Originally, the rock temple was part of a monastery complex from the time of Parakrama Bahu i, the Uttarama (northern monastery).
In a simple colonnade that gives access to the statue house in the rock, with statues of Buddha and some Hindu gods. In front of the colonnade a bo-boom has been planted. Next to it is the 14 m long statue of the reclining Buddha, the head on a pillow decorated with a lion's head. Fine are the folds of the dress, the face exudes a serene tranquillity and the soles of the feet carry images of lotus flowers. The left foot rests on the right foot and is slightly retracted. From this one can conclude that the image must represent the deceased Buddha, after his entry into the nirvana, because with a dying or resting Buddha the feet are in a straight line.
