Lissitzky developed his own suprematic style, which he called PROUN. The meaning of this word has never been fully clarified, possibilities being that it is a conflation of "proekt unovsia" ("architectural design of UNOVIS"), or "proekt utverzhdenya novoga" ("Design for the affirmation of the new"). Later he himself described it as "the stage where someone turns from painting to architecture".
El Lissitzky, actually Lazar Markovich Lisitsky (Potshinok, Russia, November 22 or 23, 1890 - Moscow, December 30, 1941), was a Russian Jewish artist, painter, graphic artist, architect, typographer and photographer.
Lissitzky was one of the leading artists in the Russian avant-garde of the early 20th century. Together with his friend and mentor Malevich, he developed suprematism from Cubism and Futurism. His work had a great influence on Constructivism, Bauhaus and De Stijl.
