About the artwork

A dolmen or hunebed is a Neolithic (4000-3000 BC) megalithic burial chamber consisting of at least three but often (many) more standing supporting stones, covered by one (or more) capstone.

Tunnel beds are, according to accepted theory, remains of prehistoric burial chambers. However, they are not to be regarded as tombs in the ordinary sense, but rather as charnel houses. It cannot be said with certainty that grave signaling was the original function of all these structures. There are dolmens that are suspected to have served only as sanctuaries.

Eugen Felix Prosper Bracht (June 3, 1842 in Morges, Canton of Vaud, Switzerland; November 15, 1921 in Darmstadt, Hesse, Germany) was a German landscape and history painter and university lecturer.

In 1882, Bracht accepted the call to teach landscape painting at the Berlin Academy of Arts. In Dresden, Bracht took over the leadership of the master studio for landscape painting at the Dresden Art Academy in 1901/1902.
