Rising from an Italian forest near the border with Austria, the earth pyramids of Platten are a series of amazingly delicate-looking natural sand towers, crowned with large stones. Formed by massive storms hundreds of years ago, these stunning geological aberrations shift and change to this day with the changing of the seasons, as temperatures shift between extremes. Many of the spires even have small rocks balancing on their peaks. Some of the spires disappear from time to time, but more eventually appear.
