Emil Maetzel, Adam and Eve, 1919

by Atelier Liesjes

This painting appears to be a modern expressionist or primitivist interpretation of the biblical story of Adam and Eve in Paradise, probably after the Fall or in a symbolic setting outside the classical Garden of Eden.
Description of the composition

In the foreground, two naked figures sit close together in a dark, forest-like setting with lots of greenery and shadows.
The figure on the left (Adam) sits upright, with a muscular body in shades of yellow-green. He has an angular, almost mask-like face with closed eyes and a calm expression. In his hand he holds a long, red stick or spear pointing diagonally upwards.
The figure on the right (probably Eve) sits more hunched over, with her head raised and eyes closed in an ecstatic or contemplative pose. Her face is strongly angular and abstracted, with dark shadows around the eyes and mouth. Her skin is warmer orange-yellow, and her body is rendered voluptuously.
In front of Eve is a basket or bowl of green fruit (possibly apples or other fruit), alluding to the forbidden fruit.
The background is predominantly dark green with abstract leaves and plants, creating a primitive, jungle-like atmosphere.

The style is clearly expressionist or primitivist: the faces and bodies are simplified and angular, with thick, visible brushstrokes and a limited colour palette of greens, yellows and browns. The figures have a sculptural, almost tribal look, as if carved from wood. No snake or tree of knowledge is visible, but the red spear (perhaps a symbol of work after the expulsion, such as tilling the earth) and the fruits allude to the story.
The whole exudes an intimate, sensual but also melancholic atmosphere - a moment of peace or connection after the fall, in a wild, untouched nature.
