About the artwork

Empire State Building in New York, Manhattan. In the background, the One World building.

Perfect for the living room, hallway, or in public spaces, an eye-catcher you keep looking at.

The gray overcast sky contrasts with the gray color of the clouds where the outside image is full of colorful vibrancy of all the inhabitants.

The construction of the Empire State Building was part of a competition in New York as to who would build the tallest building in the world. Initially, the battle was between 40 Wall Street and the Chrysler Building. But on Aug. 29, 1929, even before those buildings were completed, Al Smith announced plans for the Empire State Building. It would be 320 feet tall and contain more than 186,000 square feet of office space spread over 85 floors.

To finance the building, the group, consisting of John Jakob Raskob, Coleman du Pont, Pierre S. du Pont, Louis G. Kaufman and Ellis P. Earle, formed the cooperative Empire State Inc. with Al Smith as director. However, the building was received skeptically by critics. Indeed, the project was based entirely on speculation and the site attracted little interest from commercial developers. It was not in any of the existing office areas and was unfavorably located to subway lines and railroads.
