In 2016, it was the third tallest building in the city,[1] and ranked fifth on the list of tallest buildings in the United States.[2] The name of the building, which stands at the intersection of West 34th Street and Fifth Avenue, comes from New York State's nickname: The Empire State.[3] The building was the tallest in the world from 1931 until the construction of the North Tower of the World Trade Center in 1971.
