We trudge along empty roads, through a landscape of stone and moss. Nothing grows, not a tree to be seen, the occasional farmhouse, but never two houses in the same valley. But however empty, the colours of nature are stunning. Here close to the pole, the light is so bright and transparent that the colours of the land seem to storm at you: brown, red, green, yellow, silver, grey gold and black, occasionally topped off with white crowns of snow.
