Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, or Bernabéu for short, is the stadium of Real Madrid, in Madrid. Since the last modifications in 2005, the stadium has a capacity of 81,044 spectators. The construction of the stadium started in October 1944. On 14 December 1947 the stadium was inaugurated, then still under the name Nuevo Estadio Chamartin to the old stadium of Real Madrid. On 4 January 1955, the stadium was given its current name in honour of club president Santiago Bernabéu. Over the years the stadium has undergone a number of alterations/renovations. The last thorough renovation dates back to 1982, before the 1982 World Cup in Spain.
