About the artwork

From the collection of Teylers Museum! French anatomist and artist Étienne Léopold Trouvelot created beautiful astronomical illustrations. Among other things, he studied the Mare Humorum, a dark spot on the moon visible to the naked eye. In 1882, publisher Charles Scribner's Sons published a set of fifteen of his pastel illustrations depicting planets, comets and astronomical phenomena. Teylers Museum has fifteen of Trouvelot's astronomical illustrations in its collection, on display from 14 February to 29 June 2025 at Teylers Museum in Haarlem during the exhibition KOSMOS.
