The personification of twilight and the moon was a recurring motif in Evelyn's later works - often against a calm seascape. In ancient lore, the moon is associated with fertility and the life cycle and is often depicted by a triple goddess whose three incarnations are girl, mother and wife.
In this painting, however, the three subtly composed female nudes are all beautiful young women.
Each girl's legs, hips, belly and breasts are portrayed in the nude.
Evelyn De Morgan (London, 30 August 1855 - there, 2 May 1919) was an English painter associated with the movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. She studied spiritualism, was an advocate of social reforms such as women's suffrage and was interested in moral issues. She derived her themes from religious and allegorical figures and scenes and strong female figures, often with a message of hope and courage.
