About the artwork

The night floats through the evening sky, his red robe reminiscent of the sunset, and his wavy cloak obscures the sky behind him. He floats arm in arm with Sleep, scattering poppies gently on the earth beneath, from the arm flowers he has taken out of his belt. (The Victorians used laudanum as a soporific, made from tincture of the opium poppy). Both figures look relaxed, with their eyes closed, as if they were already half asleep. The composition for the painting is inspired by Botticelli's Birth of Venus, where Zephyr and Chloris fly with limbs entangled as a twofold entity: the blushing Zephyr (Greek for 'the west wind') blows vigorously; while the clean Chloris sighs gently from the warm breath that Venus brings ashore. All around them fall roses - each with a golden heart - which, according to legend, originated at the birth of Venus.
Evelyn De Morgan (London, August 30, 1855 - there, May 2, 1919) was an English painter associated with the movement of the Pre-Raphaelites. She studied spiritualism, was an advocate of social reforms such as women's suffrage and was interested in moral issues. She derived her themes from religious and allegorical figures and scenes and strong female figures, often with a message of hope and courage.
