Evening light on the Sjonafjorden

by Ralf Lehmann

A landscape photograph of the Sjonafjord in Norway at sunset. Orange clouds above the fjord are reflected in shallow pools of water on a dark, rocky shore. In the background, mountain silhouettes are visible at the seaward end of the fjord.

Glowing orange and red clouds stretch across a vast expanse of water and the dark silhouettes of the mountains. To the right, grey rocks slope down towards the shore. Small pools of water have formed in their hollows, reflecting the colourful sky. The larger pool in the centre of the picture, in particular, looks like a section of the evening sky, framed by dark rock. On the open water, by contrast, the warm reflections are scattered in delicate, flowing lines.

For me, the appeal of this landscape lies in the interplay between the sweeping view and the small details on the shore. The sky first draws the eye. The reflections in the rocks then guide the gaze towards the foreground, where the same colours can be discovered once more. The sloping rock faces form a counterpoint to the long bands of clouds and the tranquil contours of the distant mountain range.

As a wall hanging, the photograph brings vibrant evening colours into the room without the landscape losing its austere quality. The orange stands alongside cool grey and dark mountain contours. Against a backdrop of wood, simple furniture and grey or muted wall colours, this contrast can create a striking colour accent. The focus remains on the interplay of rock, water and light – a motif for people who appreciate coastal landscapes not least for their rugged textures.
