A portrait of an Eyelash viper. This snake has very distinctive pointed scales above its eyes, hence its name. The exact reason why this snake has the pointed scales above its eyes is still the subject of speculation. It is believed that these are mainly to protect the eyes during hunting. The snake is a passive hunter and waits for its prey to come within range. The wait can sometimes last for hours and even days without the snake leaving its site. The thin end of the tail is used by the snake as a lure.
