Every morning at exactly 07:15, Momo jumped on Sophie's bedside table. Softly at first, with a few noiseless steps, as if he was giving her a chance to wake up by herself. But when she didn't respond, he gently tapped her face with his paw. And if that didn't help? Then he dropped onto her chest with a deep sigh, his warm body like a sandbag crushing all her excuses to stay down.
"Momo, seriously..." murmured Sophie, running her hands over his soft fur. But he only spun and stayed put, as if to say: Time to get up, man. Life is not waiting for you.
It started as a habit, a little routine that Sophie took for granted. But as the months passed, she realised that Momo was more than just an alarm clock. He was there on the days when she had no energy to get out of bed. On the evenings when she felt lonely, he would lie purring on her lap. If she brooded too much, he would put a paw on her hand, as if to pull her back to the here and now.
One winter evening, as the wind whipped against the windows, Sophie sat on the sofa with a cup of tea and a book. Momo lay curled up against her side, his breathing calm and even. She smiled and whispered, "You don't just guard time, do you? You guard me too."
Momo sleepily lifted his head, squeezed his golden eyes shut for a moment, then contentedly put his paw back on her leg. As if to say: of course. That's what friends do.
