F-16 Fighting Falcon. The F-16 Fighting Falcon is a single-engine multi-role fighter jet which has been in wide use since 1979. In the Netherlands and Belgium it was the successor of the F-104 Starfighter. In Belgium, the F-16 also replaced the Mirage 5. In the Netherlands, the F-5 was also replaced by the F-16. The aircraft was designed by General Dynamics. The factory of General Dynamics was taken over by Lockheed Martin.
Although the F-16 is officially baptized as the "Fighting Falcon", pilots and ground crew also call it the "Viper". This is only a reference to the F-16V which officially has the designation 'Viper'. A less common nickname is Electric Jet, because the F-16 is the first fly-by-wire fighter aircraft.
