A feather is a thick and elongated structure made up of keratin, consisting of a shaft that is highly branched and formed in the skin of modern birds. The ancestors of birds, who belonged to the dinosaurs, also wore feathers. Feathers originated from body hair and the entirety of feathers on an animal's body is called the plumage. Many species can be identified by the colours and shapes of their feathers.
