Poppy (Papaver rhoas)
Poppies appear in places where the soil has recently been churned up. This beautiful weed thrives particularly well on sunny, dry, nutrient-poor sandy soil. They can appear in massive numbers along road verges, railway embankments, building sites, places where road works have taken place, etc.
Each seed box contains hundreds of seeds which spread around. If the seeds penetrate too deeply into the soil, they can remain there for more than fifty years to germinate. From the moment the seeds are stirred up in the ground they can germinate. The poppy can therefore be called a true pioneer plant which is the first to appear on freshly cultivated or polluted, poor soil where other plants find it more difficult.
