The large traps are placed along the shore with poles at set spots and the shooting traps are placed in the water in loose succession. The trap fishermen leave the harbour at about 6 o'clock, after which they collect, empty and put back the traps. This lasts until about 3pm, when they start unloading the eels. The big traps may be used for much longer: some fishermen use them from the beginning of summer until the end of December. The shooting traps are also used in spring to fish for smelt. This is a very lucrative fishery, but it lasts only a few weeks.
