Swans are large birds with long necks. They are heavy and take off with difficulty. When taking off, they flap their legs and beat their wings vigorously. They walk with a waddling gait.
Their food consists mostly of aquatic plants, which they look for in shallow water. Their long necks are very useful. In the absence of plants, a swan will also eat small fish such as roaches.
White swans are by far the most common in the northern hemisphere. The black swan is an extremely scarce breeding bird here. The latter are descendants of animals from waterfowl collections. They are resident birds, but the young do not survive a harsh winter in the Netherlands or Belgium. ( wikipedia)
