Flourishing in Geometry

by Arjen Roos

In ‘Blooming in Geometry’, I juxtapose the free, organic world of flowers with a composition of sharp lines, geometric planes and varying layers of depth. Colourful shapes appear to slide over and beneath one another, whilst flowers, brushstrokes and delicate botanical line drawings pay little heed to the boundaries imposed on them by geometry.

For this work, I have also reused my earlier painting *Summer Field with Wild Flowers* (work code 1278576). Fragments from that colourful field of flowers have been incorporated into the geometric planes, thus forming a remix of my own work. What was originally a single summer landscape is here unravelled and reconstructed. Recognisable flowers are transformed into colour, texture and abstract, painterly details.

On top of this, I have applied a new layer featuring drawn flowers, leaves and subtle geometric line forms. The botanical drawings refer to the field of flowers, whilst triangles and sharp angles respond to the geometric construction beneath.

In this way, *Bloei in Geometrie* brings together various elements of my visual language: painting, digital image editing, abstraction, geometry and the reuse of my own art as material for something new. For me, the result strikes a balance between order and freedom, between constructed forms and a natural world that continues to grow right through them.
