It is a popular natural walking forest where smugglers used to smuggle their contraband between the Netherlands and Belgium. Many border residents like to stay in this forest both by bike and on foot.
Large pieces of forest have been cleared in order to let the heather bloom again and restore nature. The still young bushes are doing quite well and butterflies and bees find their way again to the now young slender bushes.
I photographed this beautiful purple flowering heather in the late sunlight of August. after a long hot dry summer and spring.
