After an eruption of a volcano, it is the ferns that are always the first to reappear. Which make their presence known by peeping out between the waves of the flows of lava.
They are the new beginning, that which follows after all the violence of the eruption, for what will once again be a lush rainforest in the distant future.
For me, this picture is a very symbolic story of destruction and renewal. That you can always start again when everything around you seems to have disappeared. Being able to reinvent yourself from the rubble when the dust has settled.
In this picture, you can see how much power there is on such'a lava flow through the movement of the 'strands' lava, now beautifully frozen in time. But also how life always finds a way back into the devastation through the young green leaves of the ferns.
This photo was taken on Big Island, Hawaii. On a lava field of the Kilauea volcano.
