Frida (1907-1954) was a Mexican painter who is best known for her expressive self-portraits. Her works combine elements of surrealism, realism and Mexican folk art and are characterised by intense emotions, symbolism and the exploration of themes such as identity, pain and femininity. Despite serious health problems that affected her life and her art, she created a unique visual language that is still admired worldwide today. Frida is considered an icon of feminism and Latin American culture. Her work is inextricably linked to her eventful life and her marriage to the famous painter Diego Rivera.
