Honeycomb weathering results mainly from two chemical processes that act in opposite directions: On the one hand, the rock surface precipitates salts and lime, forming crystals that break up the sandstone. On the other hand, the rock solidifies due to the action of lime and silica. The characteristic honeycomb structure is formed.
