This painting (acrylic on canvas) originally measured 40 x 40 centimetres.
It used palette knives almost exclusively.
The style of the work is abstract, with elements of Futurism, Cubism and Surrealism.
Technically, it mainly used ''grattage'' (literally: scraping). More precisely, grattage with a palette knife in the still wet paint. This technique produces organic (or: biomorphic) forms; but also sharp, rigid lines and shapes (as in Cubism). Grattage was invented and used in the middle of the last century by Antonio Saura and Max Ernst, among others.
The painting is reminiscent of the construction of a (future) city. The repetition of forms is typical of Futurism; and certainly the subject: the futuristic city. The layering in the work, together with the grattage, creates depth and colour nuances.
