Portrait of a gannet. The gannet (Morus bassanus) is a goose-sized seabird of the gannet family. Within this family, it is the species that breeds farthest north and the only one that also breeds in Europe. Since 1991, the gannet has also been a breeding bird on Heligoland. Typical for the gannet are large colonies, in which several thousand breeding pairs raise their respective young.
