About the artwork

Late on 31 October 1917, the 4th Light Horse Brigade was ordered to gallop towards Beersheba and capture the city. Two regiments, the 4th and 12th, carried out the daring and successful assault, one of the last major cavalry attacks in history. When he visited Beersheba in March 1918, Lambert had ridden the course that the light cavalry battle had followed, jumping into the trenches to "get the spirit of the thing".

Lambert's work depicts the Australian's impact on Turkish troops and trenches. A confused mass of horses and soldiers is shown against the backdrop of an arid and undulating landscape. He has created an impression of the chaos of battle by weaving a number of detailed vignettes into the painting: of horses charging and prancing, soldiers fighting and falling men, the movement and drama are palpable.

George Lambert (Kent, United Kingdom, 1700 - Covent Garden, London, 30 November 1765) was an English landscape artist and theatre painter. He is considered a pioneer of the British landscape in art.
