About the artwork

The Gerbrandytoren, also known as Zendmast Lopik, is a tower with a transmission mast in IJsselstein, the Netherlands, for FM radio and television broadcasting, (mobile) telecommunications and data storage. The television transmitter went into service on January 17, 1961. The tower was ceremoniously opened by Queen Juliana on 9 May 1961. At 372 metres, the Gerbrandy Tower is the highest structure in the Netherlands.

Since 1992, during the Christmas season extra ropes are attached and lighted. At the top of the tower a large white lamp is placed as a peak. The tower is well visible from the A2, the A12 and the A27. The illuminated mast can also be seen clearly in the villages and towns around IJsselstein, and in favourable weather conditions up to a distance of more than 30 kilometres. The Christmas tree will be rigged up in mid-November and will be lit by a celebrity in IJsselstein during a special ignition ceremony on the Podium terrain at the beginning of December.
