Geulpoort Valkenburg aan de Geul, Limburg
On the edge of the historic centre of Valkenburg aan de Geul stands the imposing Geulpoort, a rebuilt city gate that reflects the city's rich history. Once the entrance to the medieval fortress, today it is a proud landmark that connects the past and the present.
The gate, built of warm marlstone, catches the light as only Limburg architecture can: soft, golden and vivid. In the morning light, the stone almost seems to glow, while at night the relief of the walls gains depth and the gate takes on an almost picturesque appearance.
All around it flows the Geul, which, with its clear water and rippling sound, adds a sense of tranquillity to this historic site. Walking across the bridge or under the arch, you can taste the atmosphere of centuries of history of watchmen, travellers and stories that have left their mark here.
The Geulpoort is not just another structure; it is a symbol of Valkenburg itself: open, hospitable and proud of its heritage. A place where stone, light and water combine to form a harmony typical of the Limburg landscape.
