"Girl with a Pearl Earring" by Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous paintings in the world and is considered a masterpiece of the Dutch Golden Age. The painting shows a young woman wearing an oriental turban and an improbably large pearl in her ear. The painting is not a portrait, but a tronie: a fantasy head depicting a particular type or character. Famous for its mysterious and enchanting appearance, the painting has inspired countless interpretations.
